No, it reads the exposure when you press the spot button - averaging up
to 8 spots. The "dancing diamond" merely indicates what you would store
if you pressed it again - and it dances around as the spot circle moves
over different light intensities.
I think that we covered this debate last year if you want to have a go at
researching the opinions from then. To my mind, whatever the physics or
electronics of the affair, I obtain spot-on (ho, ho!) results from my
single- or multi-spot Auto exposures every time.
