All you eclipse chasers . . . remember that looking at the sun with a
telescope is how Galileo went blind in one eye . . . instantaneously . . .
and it wasn't a very powerful one at that. It can also instantaneously
kill your camera.
I was lucky. Aimed a six-inch reflector at the sun in my very early teens
and nearly had it locked on when my dad saw what I was doing in the back
yard. I only saw him move that fast on a couple occasions. The telescope
nearly flew off its tripod when he hit it on a dead run to swing its
traverse. It must have spun around a couple of revolutions before it
stopped! Then I got a lecture about Galileo; learned a lot about the man
that day aside from his telecope work.
There is an article starting on page 36 in the June Shutterbug about
eclipse photography, some of the *safer* methods, typical equipment used,
and the hazards to you *and* your gear.
