A film scanner scans slides or negatives. In the case of slides obviously you
get a
positive image. When a colour negative is scanned software inverts the image
so you
also end up with a positive image.
If your end purpose is to get your photos into the digital domain you can
theoreticly shoot colour negative film, have the negative developed without
printing then scan the negatives.
The quality that can be achieved with film scanners is very high.
