I had similar problems when I got a used MD couple years ago.
I **think** your problem is with the release button (square black button
above the shutter trigger on the grip) It has 2 stops as you release
it. You push it down about 1/8" or so, then, as you apply a little
force on the grip down and to the rear, firmly push the release button
if the same direction. This should get it past it's 2nd stop and the
grip will come right off.
