I just had a look at my 16mm and there is no pattern of any type, just clear
glass.
I think you're a wise shopper to pass on this one.
My favorite use of the 16mm is cityscapes. During a left turn I take a
picture straight up (plus 1 exposure compensation) and capture all the
skyscrapers. Oddly there's no linear distortion because all lines converge at
the center of the photo.
I used my 18mm in the Utah slot canyons yesterday where it came in handy to
take photos of the logs jammed into the canyon walls 60 feet above my head.
I could get in the whole slot canyon and the overhead log at the same time.
I find both to be extremely sharp lens. But I usually carry around the 21/3.5
because of its compactness.
