Dear fellow list members,
Once we get into a liberal vs. conservative or rich vs. poor or black
vs. white debate we invite disaster. We should not care about each others
politics or race or views on the O.J. trial; IMO we should discuss
photography, especially Olympus photography and keep it there. All this
thread is going to do is create resentment and undermine a very fine
newsgroup. We've been complimented by just about every new subscriber or
visitor who says " Wow what a nice, informed, and friendly group you have
here, It's much better than the N or C or P group I belong to."
Even the music lyric thread that I was guilty of going off topic
with- I think it was good clean fun and serves to clear the air a bit between
threads, ( as does the "adventures of Vert and Toky" or "Gary and his Tu-Tu"
) but I'm sure it mildly annoyed some people because even before that one
started, members had stated how this list went from 40 messages a day to
about 75 a day (not my figures, I'm not sure how many we do have). While that
shows that we have a healthy, lively list here, some people are getting
overwhelmed trying to sort through all the topics and messages.
So PLEASE don't think I'm trying to preach to you, I have no right to
do that, but I 'm only saying that I don't want to see this deteriorate into
name-calling. I am proud as anything to be accepted into this wonderful group
of intelligent human beings and I have benefitted greatly from being here,
and for that I thank you. But it sickens me to see some postings attack
another person. What gives any of us the right to do that? Can someone tell
me? We are as diverse a group as you can get; don't forget our list goes
beyond national, cultural, religious and political boundaries and as such I
would hope we stay tolerant of each other's backgrounds and beliefs.Sure,
maybe there's no harm in going off topic from time to tine, but that's no
reason to scream or lose your sense of decency toward one another, no? We run
the risk of losing quite a few subscribers if this continues, and that would
be a shame.
Just my opinion and I hope I didn't over react.
Thanks
George S.
