OK, I admit I'm sorta cheap. I also experiment around a little bit.
I have been looking for an automatic 25mm extension tube for quite a while,
with no success.
Alright, I have found some, but they have cost over $50, usually close to
$75.
So, I got to thinking, what if I removed the guts from a 2x teleconvertor.
If it worked, I would get automatic function and extension very close to
25mm.
Bot a Vivitar 2x on eBay last week for $15, thought that was pretty good to
try my experiment. UNTIL, I stopped in a camera store today. In the back,
in the junk box, were TWO 2x teleconvertors for $5 each. One was a
Soligor, the other was a Vivitar.
I brought them home, took them apart (the Vivitar came apart much easier
than the Soligor) and tried them out. I now have 50mm automatic extension
for $10!
At this point, I have only tried the "tubes" with a 50mm 1.8 and can see no
vignetting. I will check this out further and keep you informed. But,
from what I see initially, this will work out fine.
Now, let's see, I still have a 2x teleconvertor coming through eBay...
