Gary,
I recently spoke with a longtime Shutterbug advertiser who told me the
ad
rate for one page is $4000 per issue! (You can imagine that it'll take a huge
amount of sales of OM-1s and T-32s to make a profit at that rate, hence the
markup you mention!) She told me most of the advertisers are praying their
internet sites will become the dominant selling domain, and then (i assume)
(my words) - they'll pack it in as far as Shutterbug is concerned.
I am a devoted Shutterbug subscriber, but let's get real here- $4000?
What
does the reader really get?- IMO- Articles that repeat themselves in a
slightly different form every year, and hundreds of pages of ads. (I know the
ads are the real interest for many of us, and to hell with the articles- but
once the camera company is established on the net, we could just as easily
surf their web sites, no? And get up to the minute inventory information, not
1 to 3 month old info.)
Shutterbug's days may not be numbered, but their years certainly seem
to be.
Regards,
George S.
