AKA "electronic" (X) sync, as opposed to "focal plane" (FP) sync, which
fires when the first curtain begins to open.
As far as I know, X sync is what all modern cameras do, as it is what you
want with electronic flash. FP sync is used with bulbs that burn for at
least 1/60th of a second, thus they cover the entire frame at any shutter
speed. Perhaps you got the terms reversed, or did I miss something?

Huh? Check out <http://www.bytesmiths.com/Art_Gallery/770918-Medium.jpg>
(65kb), taken with an OM-2 and camera-mounted QuickAuto 310 over 20 years

What you have to do to get "trails" with an Olympus TTL flash is basically
a manual flash exposure calculation, then use distance or ND filters to
make sure your flash won't deliver quite enough power. Then the exposure
will continue after the flash empties until the camera decides it has seen
enough light. Listen to the shutter and bracket accordingly to get the
right amount of ambient light exposure.
