My suspicion about the viewfinder light was right then, Alexander. I
am happy you located the problem. But it remains a strange thing that
any cable release can trip the viewfinder illuminator switch.
Regardless of the brand no cable release should trigger this switch.
In your position I would have the body checked thoroughly, because
something must be wrong with the electrical system, probably also
causing the 'normal' one week battery lifetime...
