I don't think adaptors will be necessarily easy to make. You can't use in
insert, since the threads are so close. For the ball-head base, You'll need
a metric male to 1/4" x 20 male, which is to big thing, but the other end
will require a metric male to a 1/4" x 20 female. You will need to turn
down some stock to do this in order to preserve optical alignment. You
could make a coupling plate between the two if you were unconcerned with a
permanent tilt or shift, or you could make a coupling plate with a bend in
it.
It might just be easier to drill out the rail and tap it with a standard
3/8" tripod mount, then use a Bogen insert to couple the two, but this
obviously impacts resale/collectable value.
