It may have been a "NOS" (New Old Stock) lens.

This is not bait and switch   B&S is when you ask for an item at $X
and the salesperson tries to sell you a similar item at $X+XXX.
They bait you with a low price then try to switch you to a high priced
item.

It's too bad this was just discovered.  B&H might have exchanged the
lens when it was first received.....

No, I don't have any connection with B&H except they get my $$$$
every now and then.....
