Susan,

I think you are confusing the digital image with the media it is stored on. I
believe Richard's point was that the binary representation of the image
doesn't deteriorate when making subsequent copies. This at least provides for
the possibility of copying the image from one type of media to another as
technology progresses. Something you scanned 2 years ago and put on a ZIP
drive can be copied today to a DVD-RAM drive without the image losing any
quality.
