Point and shoot cameras get round the problem by pre-flashing to make the
irises 'stop down' so there isn't so much retina visible to reflect back the
light. If you can get someone as an assistant, he/she could open flash your
subjects with a spare flash unit just before you take their picture, or even
shine a torch at them. If you don't have an assistant you could start a new
fashion by wearing a miner's helmet for the purpose. Paint "Official
Photographer" on it to give you some credo.
