Giles - I have a Trekker, which is very versatile and quite light
(advantage and disadvantage of course). IMHO a 300mm would be pushing it. I
also have a heavier Manfrotto (055), which is of course not as flexible. I
try to take the Trekker when walking/climbing.
The ball head with the Trekker is useless for anything bigger than an XA.
I've just bought a Manfrotto 352 B&S for the Trekker which is much better -
KJP have a load of used mint for 15UKP and this would be enough for 300mm,
but not a lot bigger.
The Benbo 1 is of course much sturdier. In the end I decided that one
tripod couldn't cover everything I wanted but one of these could do it - if
you don't carry it a lot or if you are stronger than me :)
