I believe another more general definition would be a tool used to unscrew
an item circular in nature. A spanner wrench is usually half or more of a
circle; it 'spans' the circle I guess. Usually, at one end of the circle
will be some kind of 'tongue' that fits into a groove on the object. Next
time you see a fire truck, take a look at the way the hoses are connected;
the tool that does this and mates with the hose couplings is a spanner wrench.
