My disaster area OM-2 has an extreme version of this same problem.
Sometimes, the ratchet won't engage at all, and I can move the lever through
a full stroke without advancing a thing. When I had the top cover off to
straighten it, I looked at the advance mechanism, and it looks like the
ratchet spring isn't doing its job. A good quick flip of the lever will
usually make it engage.
I solved that problem, for now, simply: I stuck a winder on it. I'd like to
fix it for real eventually, but it's not a high priority.
