I think the problem is the viewfinder.   Most cameras Don't show 1000f the
frame. Oly shows 97%.  This is another reason I stuck with them.  The
darkening could be at the very outer corners, which you would see on a slide
at full frame.
If you use negatives, the far reaches of the negative are often not printed.
I have cropped prints to get rid of these black corners.
Another thing I have done is mark a focusing screen to approximate the 8x10
format.
I shoot for that and trim my 4x6 prints to 4x5.  I find this to be a better
method of
in camera cropping.

This brings another interesting question to mind.
How many people use the whole negative or transparency to print?
What are your favorite print proportions?
