I think it´s a common misunderstanding (I once suffered on it too),
that you need every milimeter between two focal lenght.
Normaly I will determine first what focal length I´d like to use (angle
of view) and then move closer or further to frame the picture, which
leads to a certain perspective.
There is one beginers fault: "No, I don´t need to go closer (further), I
will zoom in!"
This should only be done, if you can´t change your position (of course
you can change primes too).
