Strictly speaking, the flash really doesn't have a "TTL mode". The TTL
mode is full power manual, and the camera quenches flash output with a
signal from one of the extra pins on the hot shoe.
All putting the panel in calculator-side down does is push the slider
over to the extreme left-hand position.
