Hi James,
This topic makes the rounds. The ubiquitous 50/1.8 (you tend to acquire
them because, like Foxy's leeches, they come attached to valuable goods) is
actually good all-round lens. You won't go wrong using it for the purposes
you mention. The 50/1.4 is reportedly more variable within the species.
