That used to work, but in recent years most film cartridges are
made so the caps tend to bend when taken off. Then you have real
trouble, as it is no longer light tight.
The newer cartridges are cheap to manufacture, but can not be reused.
The old models can be refilled over and over again. I still use some,
which must be approaching 20 years of age. Quite impressive for
something never really intended for re-use. Or maybe some reuse. I
used to buy "refill" cartridges, which were just film cut to length
delivered in a plastic container. Saved maybe 300n the price that
way. I haven't seen one for ages.
