Hi Warren.
They are single element lenses, intended for using with all standard
lenses (including the 50/3.5 macro). Olympus in their accompanying
leaflet call it 'the most economical method of taking close-ups',
which says enough....
They do make achromats, though. You must look for the IS
macro-adapters if you want those (A-type for IS1/2 has 49mm thread,
B-type for IS/3 has 55mm thread). Needless to say they are less
economical. Quality is superb.
