About 3 years ago I walked across the street to my neighbor's garage sale.
(Doris, if you ever make it to Juneau; garage sales are a Saturday morning 8-12
affair here) As I walked in I spotted a familiar black and gold box. Inside
the box was a nice looking OM-1 body with a price of $5.00. By the time I felt
my heart start to pound, my unconscious reflexes had taken over and the box was
locked in my grip. (Did I mention it was a dark and stormy morning?)
Eyes glazed, I casually walked over to my neighbor and asked about the camera.
"Oh", she said, "that one fell into salt water". I almost dropped the box. But
for $5.00 what can you lose? I checked out the camera and found no salt
crystals lining the film guides or mirror box. The shutter looked and sounded
good. The meter and the self timer did not work. I took it home.
A trip to the local Oly dealer confirmed the corrosion inside, the self timer
will never work, and they replaced a broken battery contact to get the meter
working. With all that, the body has been going strong since. I have run a lot
of film through it as my secondary body and have felt that my $30 ($5 for the
body, $25 for the repair) was a worthwhile investment.
I have an urge to make a proclamation about the merits of mechanics versus
electronics but I am resisting it.
