Unfortunately, I lost about three months' postings from this list a few
weeks ago in a hard disk crash (so, actually, it can't have been too long
ago that the problem was discussed here - you must have missed it somehow),
otherwise, I would have quoted the original postings I got my wisdom from.
Separation means that the cement holding a lens element together comes
loose, so the element separates, resulting in "soft focus" and unsharpness.
In the 75-150 it is one of the front elements that is said to be prone to
this effect. To check such a lens, hold it against the light, look through
the rear element and try to focus your eyes to the front of the lens. If you
see something that looks like a curled-up hair lying around the lens between
its center and the edge that is most likely the edge of an area that has
become separated. I think someone said that it seems that it's mainly the
older 75-150s with the chrome front that suffer from the problem.

got something wrong.
