Hello Olympians,
my sugestion for an new article in the Olympus FAQ concerning lens
designations.
Lens designations
Olympus has changed the lens designations two times:
The marking at the begining were as follows:
X.ZUIKO AUTO Y
Lenses with multicoating (MC) were designated different:
ZUIKO MC AUTO Y
After Olympus changed in the mid 80´s lens coating to MC for the
mayority of the lenses, they stoped to mark lens coating or number of
elements:
ZUIKO AUTO Y
Some inexpensiv zoom lenses were marked then:
S ZUIKO AUTO-ZOOM
The gravings stands for:
X = letter which designats the number of elements of the lens
for example: E. = 5, F. = 6, G. = 7 H. = 8, etc.
S = marking of some inexpensiv zoom lenses
ZUIKO = name of Olympus lenses stands for sharp, pointed
AUTO = marks lenses with automatic opening and closing
diaphragma blades, absent on lenses like PC and
mirror lenses
Y = lens type:
-W, wide angle lens
-S, standard lens
-T, tele lens
SHIFT, lens with perspectiv correction
REFLEX, mirror lens
-MACRO, macro lens
-ZOOM, zoom lens
