It's a bit of black plastic with a couple of plastic fresnel lenses, one of
which can be moved forwards, $25 new would be expensive. I have had one
for some time and used it only a couple of times. It's a pain to carry
around and then attach when you think you need it.

I would have liked to watch you using the setup without the M. grip cord ;-)
As you guessed, the intention is that you hook up the release button on the
Power Grip to that on the Winder.

More than likely with telephotos. I gave up with mine and use bounced
flash whenever possible, or take the flash well away from the camera with a
TTL lead.
