That is the purpose of receipts and file cabinets. At least it is a little
more difficult when you have a receipt for the item and they don't. This is
particularly important for pawnshop hunters like myself. I have no doubt
that a lot of merchandise in pawnshops is stolen, but if the rightful owner
could provide a serial number it wouldn't be there as the police computers
are linked to the pawnshops here.
