My understanding is the 'dog' reputation of the 180mm f2.8 comes
about from a tendency to produce purplish halos around stars when
used for astronomical purposes. I have also seen comments which
imply it is a nice lens when used terrestially. The 300mm f4.5 is a
very fine lens - at least in MC guise (don't know about SC versions).
I can not recall seeing anything other than complimentary comments
on this lens. I find it sharp, contrasty with a pleasing bokeh.
