I have seen many do exactly this because of a loose grounding screw. The
screw is under the top cover to the right of the viewfinder. "Camera Repair
and Maintenance" by Thomas Tomossy (? spelling) describes the repair.
Anything causing low voltage could cause this, but this is the classic
symptom I have seen from a bad ground.
