When I ventured into bird-photography some years ago I carefully chose the
Sigma APO 400/5.6 as my lens for this. I still think this is the best lens
for the money. It can't compete with the Zuiko 400/6.3 or Nikon 400/5.6, to
low in contrast, but chances are that you'll be very satisfied. In
high-contrast situations, for example under tropical conditions it performs
just great. Note that its really isn't a true 400 lens with it's 72 mm
filter thread more like 375mm (newer only-auto-focus version has 77 mm
thread).
The guy who bought my lens had also done his homework, and didn't really
want anything else than this lens.

The number of great bird-piccies made here in Sweden using Novoflexes are
astounding. This was the most used bird-lens on Nikon's and Oly's etc. well
into the late 80's. I've never used one myself as they are VERY bulky with
their shoulder and pistol-grip attachement (though being a modest 400/5.6),
but obviously they deliver very sharp results in the center of the image,
while corner sharpness is quite bad. This doesn't scare most
bird-photographers very much, as this adds to the out-of-focus effect. I've
even seen brochures for these the last years, probably still selling!
