Unfortunately, there are all too few choices for the faithful Olympian.
The Zuiko 400/f6.3 is a good lens, but not very economical, as
the 300/f4.5 together with the 1.4X-A will produce almost equally
good results -- in a smaller, cheaper package, which also focuses
twice as close.
IMHO, better choices in that range are: Tamron 400/f4, which is EDIF
and comes with a matched 1.4X converter, or the Tokina RMC 400/f5.6
which is inexpensive and, btw, works very well with the 1.4X-A.
The Zuiko 600/f6.5 is an excellent but expensive lens. Sadly, it's
too slow to stand up to the awesome 600/f4 rivals from the competition.
>From here, it's all downhill. There's a mirror lenses galore, some
quite decent -- from our dear Zuiko 500/f8, through Vivitar Series 1
450/f4.5 and 600/f8, to Tamron's SP 500/f8. However, mirror lenses
are definitely an acquired taste.
Inexpensive preset T-mount lenses abound in the 400/f6.3 to 500/f8
range (by Vivitar, Soligor, Lentar, or worse). AFAIK, most are
mediocre, but their low prices ($45-90) are, IMHO, an invitation
for individual experimentation. I have yet to do so myself.
This is the extent of my knowledge. There are some Sigma products
which I'm unfamiliar with, that may actually be very interesting.
Finally, I am currently investigating long telephotos by Novoflex
(Germany) and Century Precision Optics (USA). Anyone cares to weigh
in on any of these three?
As usual -- comments, criticism, or ridicule are most welcome, and
none are taken personally (IOW, my shields are up :-))
Cheers,
/Gary Schloss.
