Hi all:
Below are a few notes about solar eclipse photography, but I suggest
that anyone wanting to do some eclipse photography pick up "The
Cambridge Guide to Eclipse Photography" by Pasachoff/Covington.
1) While ND filters are ok for photographic work, they are *not*
acceptable for visual work. For a list of acceptable filters, check out
the latest issue of Sky and Telescope.
2) The Sun subtends an angle of about 0.5 degrees, so if you
want the Sun and some corona to fill your frame, you need at least a
300-500 mm lens.
3) If you are going to be taking pics during totality, make sure
to remove your filters after totality begins and replace them before it
ends. If you fail to remove them, you will not get any pictures (the
corona is too faint), and if your fail to replace them, you will
probably end up burning a hole in your eye and/or shutter curtain.
4) If the eclipse is not total from your site (even if it is 99%
total), you must always leave your filters on.
5) The Sun moves 15 deg/hr, or 1/4 deg/min. Totality lasts a
max of 3 mins this time, so if you place the Sun properly in your frame
and use a lens 500mm or smaller, you shouldn't need to track the Sun
during totality, unless you want every shot centered.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
