I suspect that you were not quite as horizontal as you think you were. It
is common to show some distortion with even a small amount of tilt. I have
a photo taken with a 50mm lens equivalent (it was shot on 6x6), an
unimpeachable lens, yet the photo shows tremendous distortion (which was
intentional in this case) accomplished with a fairly small amount of tilt.
You can see this effect at:

much tilt to get this look. (Note - this is an uncropped image, not as I
intended it to be seen.)
I haven't used that particular lens, but it seems to be generally
considered quite a good lens, so you probably did have less of a parallel
plane at the camera to the subject than you think.
