I noted with my Brother printers that the aftermarket toners just don't
seem to print as 'nicely'. It's as if the toner density is reduced. I
haven't yet experimented with the print density settings.

Likely there are a big handful of pages left in the 'empty' toner cart.
The toner reset on these used to be  a mechanical gear train that
rotated a flag on first use, and these were easy to reset by removing a
couple of screws and resetting the flag which would give some more life.

My latest printer uses a chip and detects that the toner is non-genuine,
and resetting the toner is done in the menu.

I would suggest the OEM cart is the way to go, but I baulk at the prices.
