Lightroom added geotag data in an xmp side car file for a Jpeg instead of
imbedding the data as usual! Most of the files were geotagged from my .gpx
file fine but a few were left out perhaps due to satellite issues or my crazy
watch. The jpeg's tagged in that way were fine and I saved the metadata to
file, side-cars were created for the raw files as usual. I processed the
untagged file and made a JPEG as usual out of Photoshop. I tried to then tag
it in LR and it would not due it except with an XMP file---should only do that
for RAW's!!?? OK, so did some digging and LR apparently considers raw/jpeg
pairs as one image unless told otherwise. I was unsure but told LR to
consider the JPEG/RAW pair as separate and then renamed the image and
reimported into LR. It still geotagged the JPEG with a xmp!! My website can't
use them. I gave up and as my website is really a SmugMug surrogate I used
SmugMug to manually tag and that worked. Perhaps I should have just
reprocessed the tagged raw file as then the JPEG should have the GPS embedded,
but it took 20 min to process. Not that I didn't waste more time than that
trying to figure out what happened. I hope this isn't a chronic issue.
Any ideas?
