I know next to nothing about doggie reproductive behavior; my only personal experience was having my leg humped by
disturbed, and disturbing, chihuahua.
I assume, though, that most of the dogs I see have been neutered. And they
still do a lot of butt sniffing.
In the giraffe case at hand, I can't help wondering whether this is a male
checking the estrus/mating status of a female?
I DO know a little about Moose mating behavior. Males scrape out a depression in the ground, pee in it, then roll in
that, to make themselves more sexually attractive to Moosettes.
