Northern Lights. It's usually worth the sacrifice to personal comfort.
As to the batteries, yes, that does tend to be a bit more of a
challenge. If I'm out on a two hour hike I'll go through three
batteries.
What is really fascinating is how much of a negative effect on image
quality lens hoods have. When it's this cold you don't use lens hoods.
