I believe this is correct, from what I have searched online. Supposedly the
floating element was to improve the lens for closer focus and be better for
portraits.
Some of what I got was from phillip reeve's site
https://phillipreeve.net/blog/guide-to-classic-olympus-om-zuiko-lenses-on-film-and-sony-full-frame/
To quote:
"This is the later 5 element redesign. Don?t fall prey to the assumption that
just because it has fewer elements it?s worse. As time goes on designs improve
so you can get better or the same performance with fewer elements. There is no
evidence that later redesigns were the result of cost cutting. It seems to me
to have the same bokeh as the previous version, and a bit better resolution and
contrast, though some disagree. The ?Zuiko MC? version has the later design as
well as this last version, just perhaps different coatings from the final
version."
The >200,000 version may just be with different coatings. This note from
photo.net
https://www.photo.net/discuss/threads/olympus-om-85mm-f2-the-om-sonnar.460561/
"Interesting information. One thing to keep in mind however, there are two
optically different versions of the 85/2. The original single coated version,
serial numbers up through 115,000 use a 6 element in 4 group design. The later
multicoated versions (serial numbers over 115,000) used a 5 element in 4 group
design. Instead of the 2nd group (starting from the front of the lens) being a
cemented doublet, it was changed to a single element, same exterior
shape/dimensions. ..."
so the 5 element version, supposedly sharper, could be 115,000 and later.
