I read with some interest this discussion...
Having moved to a new house with no TV, my partner (am I too old to say
girlfriend?) wanted to get a TV. At first she wanted a smaller TV so it was
less intrusive, but we eventually got a 63 inch as the sitting distance is
about 15 feet away. It was the right choice except for one unexpected
phenomenon.
The TV is a Sony OLED and very crisp. However, an unsettling thing is that the
shows we watch now feel like watching a soap opera, where the acting and
staging is so obvious. Watching old episodes of Grimm, for instance, or other
shows, it just seems so unreal now, movies feel like watching a play. Of course
it is acting, but I was not expecting it to become so obvious.
Given my recent interest in vintage lenses, I'm wondering if that is part of
the motivation in the cinematic world to use vintage glass?
The quality of the TV is so high it is hard to get over this new experience of
having the acting now feel so obvious. I'm at a loss with this. Is every
show/movie going to seem this way now? I may have to revert to reading novels
instead.
