I wonder how it compares in size, resolution to those already out there--Zuiko
500, Tamron SP 500 CAT or even the Siggie 600?
Newer design with an eye on keeping it small may help it.
The most obvious new thing it brings to the party is weight.
FL F Len Dia Weight Ele/Grp
Tokina RMC 500 500 8 87 78 485 7/2
SZ SUPER TELE 500 8 89 74 310 7/7
Olympus Zuiko Reflex 500 8 97 81 590 5/2
Tamron 55BB 500 8 87 84 535 7/2
With Nikon mount 91.5
Sigma 600 600 8 124 92.5 750
The Tokina RMC was one of the undifferentiated middle ground in the Modern Tests. Not optically up to the Oly, but
significantly smaller and lighter. The new one is the same size, but much lighter.
I'm guessing that those old designs still minimized air/glass surfaces to minimize light loss and reflections. Coatings
have come a loooonng way since then. Looks like they have taken advantage of that with almost all thin, separate
elements to drop a lot of glass weight. https://tokinalens.com/product/sz_super_tele_500mm_f8_reflex_mf/
Might give improved contrast, as well, although that's not important any more.
I'm not a fan of mirror lenses (I only have four 😉 ) I've very seldom got good results with them. The Meade 1000/11
has impressive reach, but the Oly 100-400 with MC14 is longer, faster, optically better, hand holdable and does AF/EXIF.
If I'd been doing my Alt stuff back then, perhaps I'd have kept the Tamron 350/5.6. I couldn't get a straight shot with
it that I liked.
The OM 500/8 is a beautiful thing, lovely to handle, but not optically as good
as my 100-400 zooms.
I'll easily give this new one a pass. 😁
At first glance it did not seem to be a standard T mount by based on the
adapters,
I don't see why not. DSLR T mount adapters are short, mirrorless, long.
but judging by pictures is fraught with hazard. The shortest adapter by eye
is the Nikon F which is already too long for OM, but if really a standard T2
mount it should be able to be mounted on OM too.
I can't imagine why they would say it is, if it isn't. And yes, I have a T=>OM
adapter on my Meade 1000/11 Mirror lens.
Some electrical connections would have been nice so get exif and a distance
encoder (like MF CV lenses) would have enabled 5 axis IS for almost any
Sonnie body. (A1 is the exception-- doesn't require that) Also it tells the
cam the FL so don't have to set FL for IBIS.
That would increase the price and complexity of course but markedly aid
usability.
Yup, there's a big divide 'round here, EXIF on one side, ALT on the other.
Othello at least would not be jealous of this CAT, Mike
