G'day Piers, yes I have had a good look at naturfotograf.com and another
site: ultavoiletphotography.com which is more a forum and is run by Birna
(who was Bjorn). Both of these sites contain a wealth of information which
I am still wading through. Ideally you would have a quartz or fused silica
lens for best UV transmission (e.g. 105mm UV Nikkor,...) but quite
reasonable results can be had from simple older lenses with only a few
elements, limited or no coatings and without any cemented groups. These
include a bunch of obscure, old & slow lenses in the 35mm--> 135mm range
and some enlarging lenses which can be attached to a focussing mount or
bellows with the appropriate adapters. Nikon Series E (F mount) lenses turn
out to be quite good and easy to find, particularly 50mm f1.8 and 35mm f2.5.
Dedicated UV lenses generally have minimal focus shift from UV --> Vis -->
IR but normal (visible) lenses need to be stopped down to cover the focus
shift. Ideally you would use a full spectrum converted mirrorless body
which allows you to compose and focus with the appropriate filters in place,
so if I find UV particularly interesting I might go down that path.
