Of the latter, Ctein said "As you know I am terribly happy with that 12 mm f/1.4, it is a brilliant lens." He spent a
lot of time and effort looking for the best 12mm lens for stars. Yes, he lucked in to a particularly good example, but
I'll bet he would still be happy with the slightly lesser one, had he not had the gem to compare it to.
If I were looking for a 12 mm for astro, I would simply get the PL 12/1.4. If the results didn't impress, I'd return it
and try another. Rent one? That's how Ctein started.
