Yesterday, June 9th, OMDS (nee Olympus) announced a new lens and a new
camera body, their first new products since taking over. I am somewhat
surprised that nobody else mentioned it here sooner.
The lens is a 8-25mm f/4 PRO lens. In terms of design and build
quality, it is similar to the 7-14mm f/2.8 lens. What they got right is
that it now can use screw-in filters. What they got wrong (maybe) is
losing a millimeter at the wide end, and a definite trade-off is the f/4
aperture. It has a manual focus clutch like most other PRO lenses.
Officially, for now, it will coexist with the 7-14mm lens, though the
9-18mm zoom seems to have dropped off of Olympus's USA online catalog.
The new lens is smaller, slightly lighter, and slightly less expensive
than the 7-14mm lens.
The camera is a Pen E-P7. It continues the E-P line feature and control
set, but has the 20MP/Trupic VIII innards of most recent low-end OM-D
models. Visually, it looks more like the digital PEN F, but lacks an
internal electronic viewfinder. One YouTube reviewer said its build
materials seemed similar to the E-M5 III. Apparently, it will only be
released in Japan and Europe.
The products are still branded "Olympus"
