Your comparison image illustrates some very good points. Thanks.
As to the Buddleia, I like to cut back as far as I reasonably can. It
will probably be 2-3 weeks before I know if I chose correctly.

Better "Hair".
But all the subtlety of the prior shot is lost. Try -1 1/3, -2.0 and -
2 2/3 EV for that subject in that light. And/or spot AE metering.
The metering on most cameras, smart thought it may be, tends to try to
balance the whole range of brightness, thus generally overexposing the
brightest parts of high DR subjects. If that brightest part is the
point of the shot, and esp. if it is red-orange-yellow, that all too
often leads to clipping of the red channel.
This is a more extreme example, smaller, redder, subject against
darker background. but illustrates the point that what seem like
extreme EV adjustments may be useful for the right subjects

And I trimmed the Buddleia bush, in preparation for a new butterfly
season.

I'm going to show this to our gardener. We have an ongoing argument
about how far to prune the Buddleia. 😁
