He's a good feller in that way is Moose. I'm using Topaz Gigapixel AI, so
as you say a different flavor. I would say "different animal" possibly,
but it definitely has some noise cleanup effect. Most of the E-1 images
I'm working with are not noisy by any reasonable standards as they are
tripod, low-ISO shots. I do have one bird photo that has some discernible
noise in OOF background areas. The focus is just slightly soft but will
sharpen some, but not without exacerbating latent noise a bit. Gigapixel
AI seems to balance noise and sharpening as it upsizes. I have a couple
E-1 images that were shot vertically and then I decided the composition was
better cropped horizontally. That means I am starting with about half the
pixels of a full E-1 capture. I'm able to use the 4x uprez setting and get
a file size for this cropped image that will print 13x19 with plenty of
pixels.
A GP file definitely looks weird at 100% -- a bit like the image is made of
legos. At 50% there is some suggestion of that, but at lower screen
resolutions, the image is clean and very easy to work with. The screen
size is less than 25% when I am looking at a 13x19 image at print size. At
normal sizes appropriate to web images and so forth, the images look really
good. E-1 images don't need help if one only wants to make web galleries,
but the GP process makes me feel like there is some genuine improvement of
the image at a foundational level.
