Trying this again, my message from week to the list has been stuck in purgatory
for being too long, let’s see if if I snip the original thread, if this makes
it out to the list (instead of just to Nathan).
Off list Nathan pointed out that 2 bolt (SPD style) shoes/cleats can cause hot
spots, and on longer rides where he expects off-bike walking, packing a light
pair of mocs will do the trick.
I know there are a bunch of cyclists here, that’s how I heard about campagnolo
for the first time in my life, on this list, in the late 90s I think… and it
took me that long to get a campy bike.

Begin forwarded message:
Very helpful! One of my goals this year is go hit a full century (gotten very
close to a metric). Making the jump to the oddly named clipless pedals after
years of platform pedals and sneakers…
Since we’re off topic (which seems to be on topic)—cyclists, penny for your
thoughts. I can’t decide if I want to go for 3 bolt, or 2 bolt (pedals, cleats,
shoes). Reasons I’m leaning towards one or the other:
2 bolt:
+ I can walk in the shoes (but really how much walking do I expect to do on
bunch rides, other than to/from bathrooms, or cafe when they reopen)
+ cleats won’t wear out as quickly
- shoes will be heavier
3 bolt:
+ seem to be more entry level shoe options
+ shoes will be lighter
- can’t do more walking than make it to bathrooms and back (see point for 2
bolt)
- cleats apparently wear out quicker, and therefore considered consumable. are
they annoying to change? i don’t know
For some background, I’m not competitive, don’t have plans to be, just want to
ride faster, and longer (group rides to the coast, down the coast, etc). Not
chasing grams, watts, and KOMs, but I’m also a lightweight at ~61KG and don’t
put out a lot of power, so trying to keep a decent P/W ratio. Despite being on
a 28# steel porker with platform and sneakers, folks I ride with are confident
I can roll with the C riders, I just don’t want to to try on platforms and get
dropped.
One day I’m sure 2 bolt is the way to go, the next day I’m sure 3 bolt is the
way to go. Please do chime in!
