December 23rd is called “lillejuleaften” in Danish, meaning “little Christmas
Eve”. So it is kind of special, signalling that the holiday period is truly
underway. I set out in the morning to photographing the first sunrise after the
winter solstice, signalling renewal and more light to come—and hopefully a
return to something resembling pre-pandemic life before the next solstice:
