I went to use my new E-M1 II with HR to do some lens testing. What? Nope, no socket for the USB cables Oly has been
using since early in the 4/3 era!
Yes, that's a USB-C port, but it doesn't do remote release. And what's that? Oh my, step back in time! It's a mini phone
plug socket. Yup, manual says that's for remotes.
Back with my first DSLR, a Canon 300D, a simple mini-plug like used for stereo headphones was the remote connection. I
used first a wired remote, then a wireless.
Then came the Canon 5D, and yes, a different remote connection, proprietary. Getting smarter, instead of buying another
dedicated wireless remote, I buy a Pixel brand, with interchangeable cables. I go Oly µ4/3, and just need a new cable,
GX7, another cable, Sony, ditto.
But I don't seem to have a cable for that oldest, simplest connection. But wait, let's look in the forgotten, but not
gone misc. box. AHA! There's the old remote for the 300D. Hmmmm, the slightly rubbery anti-slip finish is now fully
sticky - Ick!
And yet, fresh batteries, and it operates the E-M1 II perfectly! Quick web search, application of Isopropyl Alcohol
cleans off the stickies.
I'm in business! Now, what was it I was trying to do?
