My CHECK ENGINE light has been on and off and on again for a couple of
months. When I went to the dealer, they suggested that my gas cap was not on
firmly. Took care of that but the light came on again a few weeks later. You
can't replace the gasket, you can only replace the entire gas cap at a cost of
$40. Rubbish. I went to a hardware store and found an exact fit O-ring for
$0.75.
But the light would not go out. Looking under the hood I found a rubber
hose hanging loose. I figured that it was the vacuum line for the vapour
recovery system. But, there was nothing to be learned either online or in the
pedestrian repair guides about it.
To my surprise, a fellow approached me this morning at a grocery store and
asked about my pickup. Turned out he had a 2001 and wanted to know how many
miles I had on mine. I described the problem I was having and at his
invitation I went over to his place later and looked under the hood, where I
immediately saw where that loose hose went. He then showed me how to reset the
CHECK ENGINE light. I got home, took care of both items, and the light stayed
off.
God works in mysterious ways.
